Youth Lessons
Waterbabies:
Our Waterbabies program is the first step in our Elmwood Fitness Center Swim School. The Waterbabies program is designed for children six months to three years of age. This is a water acclimation program where the parent(s) or guardian and child participate in the water with the instructor. This class is not designed to turn your child into a fish, or even to teach them, basics water skills. Our goal for this initial step is simply to provide parents with the appropriate information about water safety and techniques that will aid in making water-adjustment a pleasant experience for the child. This is achieved through the use of games, songs, and laughter in interactive curriculum organized around weekly lesson plans.
Children Swim Lessons:
Elmwood Fitness Center offers swim lessons on a monthly basis. All of Elmwood’s aquatic instructors are Water Safety Instructor Certified by the American Red Cross, and have an extensive background in competitive swimming. Our program has a child appropriate teaching philosophy and recommends that parents view all classes. Our swim lesson program is available year round for children, members and non-members.
Our goals for the Elmwood Fitness Swim Lessons are as follows:
- To aid the child in overcoming their fear of the water.
- To teach basic “water safety” skills as well as the knowledge to make each child safe while in; on; or around the water.
- To have fun and enjoy themselves while in; on; or around water.
- Further enjoyment after the child’s initial introduction to the water has been achieved.
- To instruct the child in (a) proper body alignment; (b) to keep head in the water while swimming; (c) proper breathing techniques with the face in the water while swimming.
- To teach the four basic competitive swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly).
- To develop the child’s endurance in order for them to swim the length of the Elmwood pool (25 yds) of each of the four basic strokes outlined in number six.
